Georgina Yates, Garden Supervisor – Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, English Heritage

After working in retail for many years as a senior manager I retrained for three years in horticulture. I was aware it meant that I would need to work my way up as I am very career driven.

To gain experience I took on a number of volunteer roles and also set up a gardening club at my daughter’s school whilst studying.

After successfully becoming qualified I went on to work on an historic Georgian landscape, having studied Garden History and Garden Design I was able to put my new found skills in to practice and worked my way to become Gardens and Estates Supervisor. It was from there that I then moved to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, successfully working my way to Gardens Supervisor supporting the Head Gardener in his role, delivering projects, restoring the Gardens to their Victorian splendour and working alongside the volunteers and garden team to deliver history to our visitors. My own garden at home is also important to me as I have a passion for ferns and architectural plants and have designed and built it myself and it has recently featured on Gardeners World.
