Formal Bedding in a Dry Future This year’s theme for the Beautiful Borders was DOWN YOUR WAY. Find out more about Emma Peirce and Felicity Gray’s Beautiful Borders below. This border was awarded a gold merit. /*! elementor - v3.19.0 - 07-02-2024 */ .elementor-widget-image{text-align:center}.elementor-widget-image a{display:inline-block}.elementor-widget-image a img[src$=".svg"]{width:48px}.elementor-widget-image img{vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block} Designed by: Emma Peirce and Felicity Gray (Historic and Botanic Garden Training Programme Trainees, Audley End) A visitor to Audley End’s Jacobean-style parterre is likely to be inspired by the colourful and vibrant, Victorian formal bedding.  This border was designed to show how the same effect can be evoked in a small space, without the use of annuals or the need for frequent watering, in what is becoming an increasingly dry climate.Illustration by Katie Meyler /*! We're all Cuckoo here This year’s theme for the Beautiful Borders was DOWN YOUR WAY. Find out more about Shona Lockheart’s Beautiful Border below. This border was awarded Best Beautiful Border. Designed by: Shona Lockheart This border was inspired by an old farm in Colchester, which has been converted into studios for artists in which Shona took residency after she graduated. The beauty of this location lies in the repurposed buildings, but the essence of the original still being present. Remnants of its previous life are all around the farm, with the ever-encroaching nature slowly claiming it. Shona will recreate this feeling in her border, with reference to the previous use of design, while harmonising with the needs of functionality now. With thanks to garden product suppliers

The Best of Both Worlds This year’s theme for the Beautiful Borders was DOWN YOUR WAY. Find out more about Catherine McCarthy’s Beautiful Border below. This border was awarded a silver merit. Designed by: Catherine McCarthy This border was inspired by having the best of both a quintessentially English market town and the British countryside within less than five minutes from each other. In less than five minutes, it’s wonderful to find yourself surrounded by fields, hedgerow foraging and dog walking territory, where new edibles can be discovered every season. In equal measure, the namesake fresh produce market, unique independent businesses and historical skyline makes up the ‘town’. Visitors were able to explore this autumnal border, bursting with a seasonal colour palette, locally found edibles and a transition from the wild informal planting of the ‘countryside’, to a bolder more planting of the ‘town.’ With thanks to garden product suppliers

Aspects of Rock Awarded Best Small Space Designed by: Val Christmas This small space garden was inspired by Pulhamite, an artificial rock developed by the Pulhams, an eminent landscaping firm of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.In this small space garden, the rock features that were created in timely gardens such as Audley End were reflected. These rock features were created not only for aesthetic reasons but also to provide more natural environments to display plants collected from around the world by plant hunters.  With thanks to garden product suppliers

Oyster Mushroom Workshop Grow your own was in abundance in the Oyster Mushroom Workshops at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair. Brought to the Fair by Jodie and Lorraine of the Sussex-based Caley Brothers, this workshop taught visitors how to grow their own mushrooms at home. Visitors also received a kit to help get growing on their own substrate. The team covered all aspects of growing mushrooms and answered any questions along the way.The Caley Brothers aim to connect people to the world of fungi and growing gourmet mushrooms in an easy and accessible way. What’s more, all the mushrooms are grown sustainably on repurposed coffee grounds and the kits are packaged in reclaimed coffee sacks, consciously designed to be recycled, composted or reused.
