Garden Lover's Diary - December

BBC Gardeners' World Live
Garden Lover's Diary - December

In winter, our gardens take on a whole new dimension. Whilst colours are muted and textures are diminished, it serves only to enhance what is left – be it stunning orange berried Pyracantha, striking purple Calicarpa, feathery fronded Miscanthus, sweet scented Christmas Box or the elegant blossom of the Winter Flowering Cherry. What better time to reflect and take pleasure from the little things that surround us and that make our gardens beautiful. And then…let the festivities begin!

PS great value Earlybird tickets are still available (offer ends 31 Jan 18), a top last-minute Christmas present!

Begonia 'Merry Christmas' festive plants with magic and sparkle - ideas for gardeners

Festive plants

A festive plant can bring a smile to the face, even to the Christmas Grinch! So, we’ve pulled together a selection of varieties that have magically Wintery names. From Nerine ‘Christmas’ and Holly ‘Alaska’, to the wonderful Christmas Box and Pelargonium ‘Snowstorm’. Will one of these beauties make it onto your list for Santa this year?

Holly Alaska, top Christmas garden plant variety, protect your garden over winter

Protect your garden

See your garden through until spring by protecting what you can now. Stop terracotta pots from cracking by bringing them indoors or surrounding with bubble wrap. Hang feeders near roses as the birds will also pick-off overwintering pests. Bring watering equipment indoors so it doesn’t freeze and split. Rake up fallen leaves where slugs might be lurking!

In season, sprouts

It’s the Marmite of veggies, but it wouldn’t be December if we didn’t wax lyrical about the humble brussels sprout! If a bowl of buttered brussels doesn’t do it for you, have a go at this recipe from Joe Wicks (who you may have spotted at the BBC Good Food Show Summer back in June), Chicken Tagine with Spiced Brussels Sprouts and Feta
