Plants for chocoholics - the chocolate alternative

by: BBC Gardeners' World Live 15-Mar-2018

Stray off the well-trodden path this Easter and instead of sweet treats, give loved ones chocolate plants to nurture instead!

Our Floral Marquee and Plant Village are always bursting with an incredible choice of plants to browse and buy. From diminutive Alpines to dramatic zantedeschias you'll find it all.

So, check out this fabulous collection of chocolate alternatives, that we've chosen for their indulgently chocolatey names, available through a selection of our fantastic Floral Marquee exhibitors in 2018.

Plants have been selected to be on this list for their fabulously cocoa related names and are not all available to buy in early Spring.

chocolate vine available from Bluebell Arboretum and Nursery - Floral Marquee exhibitors at BBC Gardeners' World Live

Chocolate Vine (Akebia Quinata), BlueBell Arboretum and Nursery. Shop now >

A vigorous and semi-evergreen climber, Akebia quinata has lovely lush green leaves and clusters of small trailing, chocolate-purple flowers in spring. These colourful flowers are followed by dark-purple, sausage-like fruits after long hot summers.

Akebia quinata is an unusual and charming climbing plant. As a semi-evergreen plant it can keep all its leaves in a mild winter but after a cold snap or severe winter, dropping some or all of the leaves is not unusual.
