APL Avenue Show Garden competition, 2018

APL logo, association of professional landscapers, APL AvenueFor the third year running, the APL Avenue Competition run in conjunction with The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) will return to BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2018.

Five leading landscaping companies join us in June, each creating a high quality Show Garden packed with creativity, planting and a variety of ways to maximise the space in your own garden. Each company has achieved their place in 'APL Avenue' with  exceptional designs that demonstrate gardens which are inspirational, aspirational and achievable.

"The APL Avenue Show Gardens at BBC Gardeners' World Live have a real achievable feel, and will provide great take-home ideas and lots of inspiration. I can’t wait to see them in the flesh" says Gardeners' World presenter and award-winning garden designer Adam Frost.

Talk to the APL team at the Show to help demystify the process of a garden build, with advice on costs and options.

The five winning landscaping companies who will go on to create their Show Gardens at BBC Gardeners' World Live 2018, are:

A to Z Gardening Landscaping Services

A to Z Gardening Landscaping Services

Designed by Levente Papp and Alina Ciobotaru, A to Z Gardening Landscaping Services

Designed for a professional couple in Birmingham, close to the city centre, this garden is inspired by the client’s passion for travel to Asia and a love of the relaxing atmosphere of Japanese gardens.

The space features a central sunken area which includes an outdoor kitchen, relaxing corner sofa and spectacular glow in the dark fish tank. The flooring in the sunken area is a combination of paving, artificial grass and Western Red Cedar decking, the decking continues into the relaxing rear level of the garden. This back level includes a spherical water feature, Japanese plants and rockery and a hanging seat.

Conquest Creative Spaces

Designed by Ross Conquest, Conquest Creative Spaces                     Conquest
Sponsor: Roundwood of Mayfield

This garden is ideally suited to a professional couple who’ve embarked upon early retirement with grown up children that have fledged the family nest. As newly retired, the garden is now the focal point of their time and investment. The design offers a multi-functional, low maintenance garden with fire pit, outdoor kitchen, boardwalk and lawn. Walking through the lawn area over granite stepping stones within reflection pool to the sunken seated fire pit corner, the garden offers elements for all seasons.

Keyscape Gardens

Keyscape Gardens

Designed by Martyn Wilson, Wilson Associates Garden Design

With a design brief focusing on a young professional couple in the creative industries, this garden transforms the outside space of a Victorian terraced property.

The site is typically narrow and is surrounded by neighbouring gardens so the space is designed to create a sense of privacy with areas to relax and get ‘a bit of fresh air’ after a busy day. Hedging and fencing define the boundaries and create a sense of enclosure. Trees add to the intimacy and that much needed ‘fresh air’. The planting is a cool contemporary tone of greens and whites, punctuated by clarets.

Terraces break up the space, framed by a series of arbours which add drama and sculpture. The terraces provide areas for socialising and include a wood burner and log store.

This design by Living Gardens is intended for well-travelled cosmopolitan clients, with a flair for simple classy design. The garden caters for young children along with socialising, relaxing and entertaining - this type of garden could sit well behind most styles of house but has been specifically designed, in this instance, for a detached Edwardian or Victorian era building.

The garden focuses on using natural materials to create a more peaceful area to live in the garden. Catering for a family, the garden is divided into sections by sliding barn doors. At the rear of the garden there is a dedicated play area with rope swing and play house, meanwhile parents can entertain in the free form concrete seating and dining area or relax in a quiet corner.

Timotay Landscapes

Timotay Landscapes

Designed by Timotay Landscapes

Designed for a young family with two working professional adults and two young children, this is a perfect garden for a family home. It’s contemporary style and look is enticing and extends the living space through the garden. The garden will provide the family with a great entertainment space that features elements for the children and adults and includes screening to one side, areas for family time, opportunity for children’s play, outdoor cooking and dining.

The garden caters for both parents and children, with a sunken lounge and outdoor cinema and raised play platform with abstract shade canopy and outdoor kitchen and dining area, including pizza oven.
