Joanna designed her planting border in accordance with who she is, what she believes in and who she becomes when designing. Joanna believes every creation, however small and seemingly insignificant, needs its own story and narrative to become meaningful and alive. It is her own space, in her own brain that allows her to create the way she does and try to merge, all at once: creative, imaginative, intuitive, emotional thinking; but at the same time being: logical, practical and reasonable. Her border represents her brain while designing, where both right and left sides meet, without competing, in a seamless joining of logic and emotion. To represent this, Joanna has split her border into the following:
1.Left side – representing our left side of the brain: our reasonable, logical and controlled part, that allows us to function in the real world. Joanna uses structural planting, grouped in blocks of the same species, and carefully arranged, to represent it.
2.Right side – representing our right side of the brain: artistic, emotional and imaginary, open to ideas and possibilities, free-spirited side - which does not like to be confined to conformity. She represents this with loose and more natural looking plants, in a more relaxed fashion
3.There is a middle zone, where both sides meet and overlap, where Joanna's artistic and imaginative design becomes ordered and her design becomes more balanced.
