One Step at a Time

the willow wand

The Beautiful Borders, sponsored by The Willow Wand, is unique to BBC Gardeners’ World Live, packed with take-home ideas of how to squeeze the most into your garden, be it growing veg in tight spaces, eye-catching planting or clever use of materials.

The 2019 theme “Our Space” challenges designers to be adventurous and creative with a bijou spot, giving it a sense of purpose and bringing wonder and delight to all. With over twenty-five Borders expected this year, the area will be awash with flair, variety and vibrancy, and of course ideas that can be infused into even the smallest area of the garden.

Wandering through the flowers, oh what do I see?
A fluffy bumblebee staring at me!
It flies to a Buddleia and is quickly off to the next
The bug hotel can be its rest.

One step, two step, what do I see?
Aromatic herbs just for me.
My feet crunch on the bark chip below
Alliums stand tall, they put on quite a show!

Dwarf beans and Nasturtiums are next on the trail
What else can we sample, along with the kale?

A few more steps, what do I see?
Glorious Rudbeckias glistening with glee.
Swaying in the wind, this way and that.
They are bold and stripey, just like my cat!

The pond is buzzing with insects galore.
Dragonflies and boatmen sit by the shore.

What's that I see?
A bench for me?
The sunflowers are looking their very best
Sitting beside them, I shall take my rest.
