The Therapeutic Herb Concert

the willow wand

The Beautiful Borders, sponsored by The Willow Wand, is unique to BBC Gardeners’ World Live, packed with take-home ideas of how to squeeze the most into your garden, be it growing veg in tight spaces, eye-catching planting or clever use of materials.

The 2019 theme “Our Space” challenges designers to be adventurous and creative with a bijou spot, giving it a sense of purpose and bringing wonder and delight to all. With over twenty-five Borders expected this year, the area will be awash with flair, variety and vibrancy, and of course ideas that can be infused into even the smallest area of the garden.

Designed by Giorgo Daniel, sponsored by The National Herb Centre

The Therapeutic Herb Concert design incorporates herb plants with a grand piano to form a concert. The idea behind this design is to remind visitors of two ways that can help with recovery from illness or injury. This border fits into the theme “Our Space” as it is a very useful border to have in your garden. Herbs are used for medicinal and culinary purposes with the added bonuses of colour from the flowers and foliage. The plants included in this design can all be used for medicinal uses.

Another way of recovery and relaxation is through music. Giorgo has added the inside of a grand piano as a centre piece to the border because it is a recycled feature that is interesting to look at. The plants are elevated from front to back as a way of expressing the way an individual recovering from an illness would progress with the aid of music and herbs. The way the plants gradually escalate to the grand piano helps show that with courage and the help of your garden your health can be elevated during the journey to recovery. The border is predominantly formed by herbs kindly supplied by the sponsors for this design (The National Herb Centre) with added pockets of colour from bulbs, perennials and shrubs to create a beautiful border. The feature of the inside of the grand piano is the only feature in this border to ensure there is no distraction to the eye.
