BBC Gardeners' World Live Young Landscapers Award 2019

young landscapers award logoFor the second year, the Show featured the Young Landscapers Award, supported by the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) and sponsored by Marshalls.

RUNNERS UP - Reece McKay and Brian Hughes

In this tough competition, four of the very best young landscapers in the country, all aged under 28, formed two teams, to display their high calibre skills. Designed to champion skills amongst young people and nurture emerging talent, the competition saw the contenders working in pairs to build two challenging Show Gardens packed with an array of landscaping elements. 

Both Show Gardens were assessed on Wednesday 12 June by the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show Garden Assessment Panel plus two dedicated judges from the WorldSkills Assessment Panel.

Matthew Woods and Sam Gordon were 1st and 2nd respectively in 2018’s World Skills Uk Live competition. Matthew was also crowned The Association of Professional Landscapers “Rising Star” at their annual awards in London.

Reece Mckay and Brian Hughes team up to build the Argent Garden in this years Young Landscapers competition. Both studied at Cafre college nr Belfast and finished 3rd and 4th in 2018’s World Skills UK Live competition.

You may recognise these names as they’re the four landscapers taking top spots at the WorldSkills UK Finals in November. Matthew Wood was crowned champion in landscaping with the Gold award. Meanwhile fellow apprentice Sam Gordon, from The Gardenmakers in Warwickshire, took home the Silver, in a six-person national final, which was held at WorldSkills UK Live at the NEC Birmingham. Sam took Silver, Reece took Bronze, and Brian was awarded Highly Commended.
