Beneficial planting for a variety ofvisitors, some featured on our stepping stones.Using natural & repurposed garden materials to create features and planting structures. Reclaimed wood and woven whips create sides for a higher planted area and small spaces for creatures to shelter.Small steps towards sharing our space. Free & Fruitful

Free & Fruitful My goal was to create a sense of ease and possibility. The path provides an active, unimposing space fit for a relaxed picnic picking berries with a friend, space to roll out a yoga mat or allowing the moon gate to guide the viewer to what may lie beyond the gate. I imagine painting the framed landscape with my dog lying sunbathing at my feet, plants on either side maintaining privacy. The beauty is in the versatility, whether you choose to share the space with the landscape, the wildlife or even your sense of adventure.  Designed by  Lorne Hewitt The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening. Eat the City

Eat the City ‘Eat the City’ is a garden inspired by the urban environment, harnessing permaculture, edible-ornamental and companion planting ideas to create a beautiful space, that the whole community and wildlife can enjoy.  It could be said that a neighbourhood, a city, a community and a garden all share the same habits. They cannot be built, they are things that must grow. You cannot build a neighbourhood any more than you can build a tree; you can only create the right conditions, plant the seed, care for it, and wait.   Designed by  Phoebe Walsh-Gamgee The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening. Magic Moments

Magic Moments This garden started many years ago in back gardens, allotments and parks. It started with simple moments, spotting butterflies, collecting frog spawn and teddy bears picnics with friends.  The early moments that inspire the next generation of gardeners, be it making daisy chains, fearing spiders in the shed or perfecting rose perfume all these small, shared moments create the gardeners we become. They provide us with those glorious moments of nostalgia where we reminisce about tomatoes warm from the vine, the scent of the sweet peas cut for the table, the peas fresh from the pod.  This garden hopes to capture those moments and to inspire others to create magic moments of their own. Our Safe Haven Designed as a ‘safe haven’ for anyone who needs a peaceful spot to stop, breathe and take in nature. A short sensory lavender path grazes your ankles as you meander through right colourful planting to pollinator friendly plants and flowers. On reaching the centre you’ll find a beautiful handmade bench, which sits behind a calm tranquil woodland. Whilst you sit you’ll hear the buzzing of bees, see the fluttering of butterflies and smell the scent of lavender. Still in the air – your safe haven. Grow In Common

Grow In common Since 2021 the community of The Growing Project have adopted a stretch of canalside land in Digbeth which we’ve since named the Common Field. This 1,200m2, post-industrial space holds the history of Digbeth in its soil and as such, contains toxic heavy metals including lead, arsenic and cadmium at levels that are above safe limits for humans and many other animals and plants. Yet despite this, life flourishes here. Humans disturb the soil and new seeds of campion and celandine spring to life, the nettles host thousands of caterpillar diners and the clover, willowherb and achillea bob with pollinators. Among these predictable characters we’ve added phytoremediators; sunflowers and mustard greens, water crowfoot and red fescue. A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved

A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved “This border design is a space for people to share their problems and woes, a space to unravel and talk, and to open up with their thoughts. Its a safe space surrounded by nature that they can sit and share a moment with nature and wildlife or talk to a friend to help with their own wellbeing. The Yin/Yang paving reflects the opposing forces and the user can sit at the side that reflects their feelings at that time. The cross over of the corten artwork is a bridge from the dark side to light side, the planting compliments this by having low deep colours crossing over to a taller lighter palette as the users mood is lifted. This border is split into two but provides a calming and welcoming area that can be used as one, with one goal in mind to talk and share your thoughts.” Designed by  Samantha Theakstone The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening. Tête-a-Tête “A community of heads – this is an interpretation of a quiet community space where ‘bonding’ can occur with a friend, work colleague or stranger. This beautiful border includes a water feature to muffle private conversations while adding a sense of calm and complemented with scented plants. It’s pollinator friendly with sustainable plants for year round interest. Whilst sat at the bench you can have a sense of mindfulness and tranquillity within your community garden. This has been discovered through my own journey of peri menopause in which I have found a new purpose, career and focus in life as well as looking after my family.” Designed by  Nerys Vizard The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening. Everyone Needs Good Neighbours

Everyone Needs Good Neighbours “‘Everyone Needs Good Neighbours’ focuses on two neighbours who have adjacent rear gardens. They have used this proximity to their advantage by forming a meandering gravel pathway that traverses the boundary between the gardens and means they can easily access each other’s space in order to enjoy the garden on the other side as well as to help each other with tasks such as watering, exchange produce and plants, share regular cups of tea (or something stronger) and even BBQ together !!The planting in the border includes a wide range of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, herbs and annuals with a limited colour palette based on white and yellow flowers. Following In My Footsteps “The ‘Following In My Footsteps’ garden celebrates education through shared experiences and promotes having a deep connection with nature whether young or old.  Having grown up following in my grandparents gardening footsteps, I wanted to design a space that allows my children opportunities to play whilst still feeling like my own little haven.  Areas such as the mud kitchen, sensory path, Jurassic jungle and the weaving seat provide spots for exploration and adventure. The border is a space to learn in and grow together but will immerse children in independent play long enough to get some weeding done!”  Designed by  Leanne Wood The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening. On the same wavelength at our inland

On the same wavelength at our inland “This border is an inland beach. The planting uses inland plants which evoke a sense of being near water, in predominantly blues and greens, with pops of complimentary orange, to add depth and dimension. The border is arranged on geometric intersections of squares to provide structure to the design. A sine wave flows through the space, adding movement and flow as seen on the surface of a large body of water. The space allows exploration among the biodiversity and flowing stream as well as relaxation. A ceramic pebble and driftwood feature has been created by a community group and is a space to share the experience of exhibiting as well as a space to share the moment.” Designed by  Kim O’Brien The theme of 2024 is ‘Share my Space.’ The theme is all about harnessing the potential of small garden spaces and using them as catalysts for building a sense of community through gardening.
